THE remains of the Day
The novel explores the life of a man who focussed on work and missed his chances at love. Twenty years ago he fell in love with a co-worker but never admitted he loved her. Now, as an old man, he visits her again to see if it is too late to start a relationship...
The language of 'The Remains of the Day' is formal, upper-class English which was predominant around the 1920s-1950s so may be confusing in places. The idea that love is more important that duty or work is an important one.
